Mariana needed a container at her desk to hold all her markers and such. So, I made one. This is a simple pine box that I threw together in very little time. I carved some flowers and intertwined circles on the lid.
For this box, I just drilled a hole on either side and glued in dowels. Then I slide the cleats on and nail/glue the cleats to the lid. On the previous carved cherry box, I did it the same way, except I didn't use dowels - when I cut the back board I left a small section longer on each end and whittled them into roundish shape.

Very nice. I like putting the cleat thing on the outside. How did you do the hinge? Does it go all the way through the back?

What an igenious idea--a built-in hinge!
