Bastrop State Park

We spent Thursday and Friday hiking the Lost Pines Trail in Bastrop State Park. We hiked in Thursday, camped just off the trail, and hiked out Friday.

Quincy did really well. Two days of hiking is pretty good for a puppy only six months old.

Happy Halloween!

Jack

Jenny carved our pumpkin tonight. She made him look like Jack the Pumpkin King from the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The finished product looks really good!

Huntsville State Park, Texas

On Saturday, we went to Huntsville State Park. It was our first time camping with Quincy, so we wanted to keep it tame. It was car camping and only for one night.

We walked about 4.5 miles on the trails, and Quincy handled it well. There were a lot of people camping at the park, but once we went out on the trails we didn't see many people. Apparently, most people just hang out at their tent all day.

Herbs

My window sills are getting crowded. Shown here: basil, parsley, oregano, mint, cilantro, and a cactus.

Honey Oatmeal Wheat Bread

Honey Oatmeal Wheat Bread

This will probably replace my old wheat bread as our regular sandwich bread. I will be tweaking the recipe for a while though, since this was just the first try.

Quincy's Haircut

We cut off Quincy's skirt. He looks funny.

Quincy's Surgery

On October 2nd, Quincy was neutered. Contrary to how it may look in the picture, he recovered quickly and easily.

Mozzarella

Some might think we are a little crazy for making butter. But we just dialed it up a notch. Tonight we made cheese!

The top picture shows the curds after draining off most of the whey. Below, you can see me stretching the cheese, making it firm and smooth.

We made about a pound of mozzarella. I shaped them for easy snacking.

Candles

Speaking of decorating, I made these wooden candle holders and mounted them in our living room. We bought homemade beeswax candles for them (from the farmers market of course).

They should be useful the next time we lose our electricity for 14 days.

Nature Prints

We are slowly decorating our walls. I have always liked antique nature prints. So I hung up five by these guys (ignore the prices, we didn't pay that!) in our main hallway. I have a smaller set of three, but I don't know where I am putting it yet.

Eventually, I want some by John James Audubon too!

Bayou City Farmers Market

Jenny and I have made a habit of buying a significant amount of our groceries at the Bayou City Farmers Market in Houston.

Besides buying whatever vegetables are in season from whoever has them, we have become loyal weekly customers of a few of the vendors.

We typically buy some well-seasoned goat cheese from the Blue Heron Farm stand.
And Olde World Farms keeps us supplied with chicken and Italian sausage.

If you want to find a farmers market in your area, then go to Local Harvest and type in your zip code.

Presents for Jenny

For Jenny's birthday, I ordered her prints of these illustrations. The artist is a guy named David Moore.

I picked these two because, in addition to being pretty and playful, they have an environmental theme.

Jenny's Birthday

Today (October 3rd) is Jenny's birthday!

However, I won't see her until tonight. She is in Louisiana for work training.

Churning lots o' butter.

A couple weeks ago (during the power outage), we decided to make butter. It was pretty amazing stuff. It was so light and fluffy and FRESH.

When you make butter you also get buttermilk, which you drain off the butter. I saved this buttermilk and made buttermilk pancakes the next morning. This is true buttermilk, unlike the thick milk product sold in stores as "buttermilk". That stuff was developed to have the same baking properties, but it tastes very different.
